APPLICATION OF EXCAVATION METHODS FOR BRIDGE FOUNDATIONS
DE ROL VAN HET WAARGENOMEN RISICO BIJ DE KEUZE VAN VERVOERMIDDEL
After illustrating the method of excavation for deep and shallow foundations with vertical excavations without shuttering, an investigation is made to show how far this method can be applied in bridge construction work. With the aid of edge protectors it is possible to excavate foundation areas of 4 x 15 M. For larger areas a subdivision into single areas is possible. Recommendations are made on the form and stiffening of edge protectors, for suspending the reinforcing cage and for the partial withdrawal of the edge protectors immediately after concreting has taken place. A concrete cover of >100 mm is recommended. As it was not possible to adhere to the current regulations fully, special dispensations had to be obtained. The following advantages are enumerated: reduction in working hours and work force, the subjective risk is too low. (TRRL)
