THE RESCUE HELICOPTER IN THE ORGANISED RESCUE SERVICE
DER RETTUNGSHUBSCHRAUBER IM ORGANISIERTEN RETTUNGSDIENST
An evaluation of 10000 emergency ambulance journeys in Frankfurt/Main showed that each accident site was reached within an average of 7 minutes, in accordance with the basic requirement of the organised rescue service. The helicopter system is available for a better service in rural areas. The use of the helicopter, the advantage of which lies in its greater speed and independence of traffic jams, is similar to the use of the emergency vehicle. The BO 105 helicopter can transport two casualties, who may be tended by a doctor during the flight. Medical equipment corresponds to that of the emergency vehicle. Whereas patients with slight to medium injuries are usually transferred to the emergency vehicle after initial treatment by the helicopter doctor, helicopter transport has to be provided for seriously injured patients so that they can be brought directly to the clinic best suited for treatment of their injuries, irrespective of distance. The helicopter is especially ideal for the secondary transportation of seriously injured people into special clinics. (TRRL)
