A NEW DEVICE FOR THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF PAVEMENTS: THE CURVIAMETER

UN NOUVEL APPAREIL D'AUSCULTATION DES CHAUSSEES; LE CURVIAMETRE

The Curviameter is a new apparatus for the non-destructive testing of pavements at a speed of 18 km/h. It records the vertical pavement deformations produced by the rear axle normally loaded at 13 metric tonnes travelling over the road. It gives a direct value of the maximum deflection and of the maximum curvature observed. Problems arising during measurement are quoted: influence of load geometry, propagation phenomena, and viscoelasticity of the pavement. Details are given of the Curviameter: Caterpillar track, measuring sensor, operation on bends. Lastly the reproducibility and accuracy of measurements obtained with this device are discussed. (TRRL)
