INCOLL - A NEW MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE FOR EMISSION CONTROL ON VEHICLES

INCOLL - EIN NEUES MESSVERFAHREN ZUR EMISSIONSKONTROLLE AN FAHRZEUGEN

The author reports on a new quick test for emission control which in a short time can indicate the emission from a vehicle with very little variability. The basic principle of this new method is that the vehicle engine is braked by its own moment of inertia in order to attain such pressures and temperatures in the engine that significant quantities of nitrous oxide, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are produced. The repeated emission tests can be carried out under given conditions for the individual vehicle in its normal state with a variation coefficient of 1 to 3 percent, compared with more than 10 percent in conventional sampling tests. The test can be conducted in a period of between 1 and 4 minutes, depending on whether a balancing out of temperature is required or not. Because of the short time and automation the costs of each test are considerably reduced. The method can be applied to all types of combustion engine. (TRRL)
