Introducing Sydney's fully automated metro rolling stock

Sydney Metro is Australia's largest public transport project and the nation's first fully-automated metro system. This paper provides an update on the design, testing and commissioning of the metro rolling stock with a specific focus on the differences which distinguish fully-automated systems from conventionally-operated rolling stock. The design of fully-automated rolling stock modifies many of the typical design considerations given to passenger rolling stock, such as requirements for the cab and front-end design, signalling interfaces, operational requirements, and communication with customers. Particular consideration must be given to design parameters and operational responses for emergency and degraded modes of operation. In addition, interfaces between rolling stock and other rail systems, such as platform screen doors, signalling and radio systems, introduce further requirements to the rolling stock design. While fully-automated metro systems have been implemented around the world, this paper examines how these challenges are addressed in the context of the Australian rail environment for passenger rolling stock design. The paper also provides an overview of the testing and commissioning approach taken for the rolling stock, including considerations for the testing of fully-automated rolling stock and integration with other rail systems.
