REALISTIC APPROACH TO THE OPTIMUM DESIGN OF STATICALLY INDETERMINATE PRESTRESSED BRIDGES

The complete overall optimization of prestressed concrete statically indeterminate bridges is too complex a problem to be solved efficiently and economically by everyday practices. The authors briefly discuss the arguments in favour of restricted optimization in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 outlines various optimum design algorithms, the limitations of which are discussed and compared to the original method proposed in Chapter 4. The latter shows how the problem of the optimum design of prestressed statically indeterminate bridges can be transposed into a linear program based on the total prestress force. Various problems arising from the taking into account of the prestress effects and operational stresses are examined together with the validity of applying linearity to the latter. A complete example illustrates the theory of the authors that, for the optimum design of complex structures, a rational idealization of the problem and the seeking of an adequate heuristic system are essential conditions for reaching a realistic solution, while the refining of the mathematical process plays only a secondary role.
