The provision of railway infrastructure other than track and structures for the Perth to Mandurah railway

The construction of the Perth to Mandurah railway provided an opportunity to Institute significant changes to railway operations that would flow through to the rest of the rail network. These Included a change to timetable-driven train control, ethernet LAN communications for signalling, and adoption of European Standard EN 50122-1 for earthing & bonding. For some 30km of its length, the Perth to Mandurah line occupies the median of the Kwinana Freeway. The close proximity of road and rail traffic has led to an expansion of the PTA's primary CCTV surveillance requIrement to include rail reserve security. Where the interests of the PTA and the Main Roads Department (MRWA) overlap, opportunities for cooperation in surveillance and intrusion detection are being actively explored. The completion of the Mandurah line together with the associated network-wide technical advances has been extremely timely in the context of world economic trends and rapidly increasing pressure on public transportation.
