ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS UNDER TRIAXIAL COUPLES

Reinforced concrete beams of certain structures, such as curved and skew bridges or flyovers and spandrel beams of high-rise buildings with shear walls located eccentrically, are often subjected to triaxial couples under a combination of vertical and lateral loads and seismic effects. Using the space truss theory, a method for the ultimate strength design of reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion and biaxial bending couples is presented in this paper. To facilitate design, charts for beams reinforced symmetrically and unsymmetrically are given. The design procedure is illustrated by two numerical examples. (Author/TRRL)
