SURFACE DEFLEXION IN A TWO-LAYER ELASTIC MEDIUM UNDERLAIN BY A ROUGH RIGID BASE

Computation of surface deflexion and stresses in layered media is often needed in engineering practice, especially in highway design or evaluation and in foundation design. One case which is often encountered is that of a two-layer medium underlain by a rigid base. In this paper, factors for calculating surface deflexions under a loaded area of any shape, resting on an underlain two-layer elastic system, are presented in tabular form. These factors can be used for constructing influence charts for any case of first-layer thickness, depth of rigid base and modular ratios (from 1 to 10). Two practical cases of calculation, that of the settlement of a foundation on an embankment and that of the deflexion bowl of a pavement, both of which include a rigid base, illustrate the use of the data and the effect of ignoring the existence of either the rigid base or the two-layer system.(a) (TRRL)
