PERFORMANCE OF ALTERNATIVE AUTOMOTIVE FUELS

The alternative automotive fuels to petrol available in New Zealand are the gaseous fuels methane, butane and propane, and the two alcohols methanol and ethanol. This paper discusses the performance of these two types of fuel based on research in New Zealand with spark ignition and compression ignition engines. It is concluded that these fuels or their derivatives could have a part to play in the New Zealand fuel economy, in spite of present problems of cost, performance, and possibly durability for the vehicle operator.
