GROUND ANCHORS
A general indication of the load carrying capacity of side-loaded vertical and inclined ground anchors is tabulated. It is noted that conventional laws of soil mechanics, when applied to ground anchors, predict much lower load capacities than observed in practice. Predicted load carrying capacities are obtained through the use of semi-empirical formulae but actual values must be determined on-site by pull-out tests. It is considered that there is a lack of information available on the design of side-loaded ground anchors and that information is required on the diameter of the anchor grout annulus placed with pressure grouting as well as the manner in which anchor load is mobilised relative to anchor movement.
