GIANT TUNNELLING MACHINES WORKING ON CHICAGO'S TARP
A rock tunnelling machine employed on the Chicago tunnel and reservoir plan (tarp) is the mark 30 9.83 M diameter tunnelling machine manufactured by Jarva Inc, Ohio. The one-man operated, 900 t machine uses a cutter system consisting of a rotating eight-spoked cutter wheel and 66 cutter assemblies. A slotted roof shield is provided for protection and ground support while roof support operations are being carried out independently of boring operations. The complete tunnel system will require 211 km of deep tunnels, shafts and storage reservoirs constructed in thick dolomite rock sheets about 61-91 M underground. (TRRL)
