EFFECT OF FLEXIBILITY OF PIER ON HORIZONTAL FORCES DUE TO TEMPERATURE CHANGE

Temperature changes cause dimensional changes in the bridge structure. Restraint to linear dimensional change along the length of the bridge creates a horizontal force which acts on the piers, abutments, bearings and bridge deck. The piers and abutments undergo deflection under this horizontal force. This movement is generally ignored in the design. If this movement is taken into account, the horizontal force is considerably reduced, and would lead to more economical substructures and bearings. The procedure for estimating the horizontal force due to temperature changes is described in the paper for the condition when the flexibility (deflection) of pier or abutment is considered. An example, illustrates the reduction in force that is possible.(a) (TRRL)
