CHICAGO'S TARP (TUNNEL AND RESERVOIR PLAN) PROJECT

The tunnel and reservoir plan (tarp) project concerns the storage of excess sewage and rain water prior to treatment. The first stage involves 109 miles of tunnelling, and details are given of the design, performance and tunnelling progress to date of the 900 tonne jarva mark 30 full-face tunnel boring machine (tbm). Boring is through finely bedded dolomitic limestone. Two designs of jarva machines are included, boring data are tabulated, and the boring cycle is illustrated. Reference is made to the design, development and replacement of the rock cutters, and finally a description is given of the muck conveyor system designed to match the tbm's output. (TRRL)
