THE POSSIBLE MANIPULATION OF SPEED ESTIMATES IN TESTS
DIE MANIPULIERBARKEIT VON GESCHWINDIGKEITSSCHAETZUNGEN IM EXPERIMENT
The number of disturbances makes the experimental study of speed estimates on the roads extremely expensive. It was proposed to test the idea of using cinematography for an experimental study. With this in view, films were made of three different vehicles in different surroundings and at different speeds. The result of the study shows that the estimation of high speeds can be easily manipulated. It was also established that the film method is suitable for studying errors in perception at high speeds. Film experiments can be a useful way of systematically analysing adverse effects on the perception and estimation of speeds in traffic. (TRRL)
