EXCAVATION HANDBOOK

The Excavation Handbook discusses the methods, machinery, and costs for excavating the materials of the Earth's mantle, or regolith, from their initial locations in situ to their final deposition in construction or their final or near final deposition in mining. These materials range from the earthy to the rocky. Soft earths are really finely divided particles of rock and they are, petrologically, little rocks. Frequently in the text the material is called rock, rock-earth, earth-rock, or earth, the two intermediate designations meaning that either rock, rock-earth, or earth, earth-rock, predominates in the material. The word "excavation" means work in an open cut, exposed to the sky, and it does not include underground excavation, as in mining and tunneling, except when tunneling is supplementary to open-cut excavation. The Excavation Handbook includes these aspects and phases of many excavations: 1. Geology of excavation as it relates to rocks, ores, minerals, rock formations, rock weathering, and landforms. 2. Kinds of open-cut excavations, which are indicative of the diversity and size of these cuttings and fillings. 3. Examination and exploration of excavations, which are requisite to a well-considered estimate of costs and to a later successful prosecution of the work. 4. The costs of ownership and operation of the machinery and facilities, into which the productions of machinery are divided in order to secure unit costs for the work. 5. The methods, machinery, productions, and costs for the regular seven operations in excavation. 6. Important correlative operations, the principal secondary machines, and the complements of the major machines. 7. Calculations for quantities of excavation, into which productions of machines are divided to determine time for the work. 8. Preparation of a typical bid for excavation and a typical means for scheduling excavation as a part of the complete project. 9. Appendixes, a glossary, and a bibliography covering the science and practices of excavation. 10. A complete, detailed index. (Author)
