Multifunctional Composites for Sustainable Civil Infrastructure Systems
Construction material used in future infrastructure systems must possess high mechanical performance and durability as well as functional properties such as self-recovery or self-sensing to improve longevity of structures. This project explores the design, fabrication, and characterization of advanced polymer composites. The developed composites exploits intrinsic smart properties of shape memory alloy (SMA) fibers and advantageous characteristics of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). SMAs are a class of metallic alloys that have unique properties such as high strength, large deformation capability, good ductility and damping capacity, long fatigue life, large electrical resistivity and excellent re-centering ability. GNPs that consist of few layers of graphene have emerged as one of the most attractive nanofillers for polymer matrices with an excellent balance between structural properties and cost. The use of SMA fibers in a thermoset epoxy matrix reinforced with and without GNP fillers was studied to achieve a composite material with high ductility, high impact resistance, good energy dissipation, self-centering ability and high strength.
