This paper represents the first interim report of the "car sage" project being carried out by the Transport Studies Unit for the Department of Transport. The aim of this study was to provide an understanding of patterns of car use, with a focus upon causal factors associated with differences in household car use and changes in these patterns over time. This report presents the findings of pilot survey work. It describes how procedures and survey instruments were tested, and shows how information from the main survey in-depth work will be handled. Details are also given of the procedures and survey instruments to be used in the main survey. (TRRL)
