Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2018 Preliminary Data

The total number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 35 percent during the years 2008-2017, while traffic deaths of all other types decreased by six percent during the same period. As a percentage of total motor vehicle crash deaths, pedestrian deaths increased from twelve percent in 2008 to sixteen percent in 2017. Previous Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reports predicted the distressing increase in pedestrian traffic fatalities observed in 2015 and 2016, based on initial data provided by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs). The current study is based on preliminary data from the fifty states and the District of Columbia and shows that during the first six months of 2018, the reported number of pedestrian fatalities increased by three percent as compared to the first six months of 2017. Twenty-five states plus the District of Columbia had increases in pedestrian fatalities, twenty-three states showed decreases, and two states remained the same. Individual states vary broadly in their fatality numbers and differ in their approaches to address pedestrian safety. GHSA analyzed the preliminary pedestrian fatality data to determine which factors contributed to the alarming increase in deaths.
