DRIVER AID & EDUCATION TEST PROJECT (JULY 1978)

Report on a study to determine whether automobile fuel economy can be increased by training drives in fuel-efficient driving techniques and by using manifold vacuum gauges to display the fuel economy level to the driver. Shows average miles per gallon for each test group, by month and urban/highway driving and test group vehicle characteristics; monthly air temperatures at test sites; driver questionnaire results; and fuel use for each test group by vehicle type (compact, intermediate, or pickup truck) and vehicle age. Test were conducted in 1976-77 using 435 cars and light trucks engaged in typical highway and urban driving; vehicles were selected from the fleets of the DOE Nevada test site and the Clark county, Nev. Government.
