Crack treatment performance on pavement marking, joint and shoulder lanes in Texas

There are two methods of crack treatment for sealing water and other debris out of asphalt pavements: crack sealing and crack filling. Crack sealing uses a router to cut the crack to provide a uniform rectangular reservoir for greater penetration of sealants. On the other hand, there is no pavement removed with crack filling treatment. This research is intended to compare the performance between filling and sealing technique on the joint, pavement marking and shoulder lane. Four test sites were selected based on different climate regions, annual average daily traffic and pavement conditions in Texas, and cracks were treated with two treatment techniques using the same sealant material and finishing technique. Generally, sealing treatment is found to outperform filling technique. Following proper guidelines during installation of sealing treatment can ensure a long-term service period and cost-effectiveness compared to filling technique.
