Development of Displacement Estimation Method of Girder Bridges using Measured Strain Signal Induced by Vehicular Loads

Displacement is one of important items representing structural integrity. This paper proposes a method of estimating displacement of girder bridges constructed at site where it is difficult to install a fixed reference point for its measurement by using only the analytically derived strain-displacement relationship. In order to verify its validity and field applicability of the proposed method, laboratory test and field load test were carried out, and the displacement estimated from the proposed method was compared with the measured one by the displacement transducer, directly. As a result of this study, it is found that the displacement can be estimated satisfactorily using measured strain signal if the strain-displacement relationship is precisely defined by structural analysis. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to be widely used for the displacement estimation of girder bridges that cross rivers, highways and railways or have high clearance.
