Emerging Policy Approaches to Electrify Ride-Hailing in the United States
As cities in the United States seek to deal with the externalities from ride-hailing services, electrification offers an opportunity to eliminate emissions from these vehicles. With declining battery costs and the growing availability of long-range electric vehicles, ride-hailing fleets are ready for electrification. The authors describe several major projects for electrification of ride-hailing operations through 2018, while outlining the obstacles to faster electrification. The authors present an overview of new policy approaches at state, city, and utility levels that encourage adoption of electric vehicles in ride-hailing companies, with several policy suggestions.
