Texas Mechanistic-Empirical Flexible Pavement Design and Analysis System (TxME) Student Handbook
This student handbook is to provide basic and advanced training about the use of the Texas Mechanistic-Empirical Flexible Pavement Design and Analysis System (TxME). It can be used as a TxME user manual and a standalone resource of Mechanistic-Empirical (M-E) flexible pavement design training material. The purposes of the TxME training are to: (1) Provide students advanced, in-depth knowledge about the flexible pavement design; (2) Help students understand the importance of M-E models in pavement performance prediction; (3) Allow students to examine the influence of key input parameters such as climate, traffic, pavement structure, and material property; (4) Let students explore different combinations of material design and thickness design and choose the best option; and (5) Help students to identify the issues that some kind of materials or pavement structures may cause. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: (1) Gain in-depth understanding of performance models and material properties; (2) Be familiar with the TxME interfaces, functions, and features; (3) Examine the influence of climate, traffic, pavement structure, and material property; (4) Use the TxME to conduct flexible performance analysis and design for three types of flexible pavements: thin surface, conventional, and perpetual pavement; and (5) Connect the TxME with the current Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) flexible pavement design system (FPS 21) and select best design option.
