Delving Beneath the Surface

Railway train wheels that break in service often do so as a result of subsurface discontinuities, with fatigue cracks growing from continuous cyclic loading. This article profiles the Tycho Automated Cracked Wheel Detector Systems (ACWDS), a wayside non-destructive evaluation (NDE) system designed to inspect moving wheels for subsurface damage. The ACWDS ultrasonic system can detect internal discontinuities in railway train wheels, and Transportation Technology Center, Inc (TTCI) has been working with Tycho to adapt its existing technology for inspecting freight trains In North America.
