THE SERVICE PERFORMANCE OF BRIDGE DECK JOINTS INSTALLED IN SHORT SPAN BRIDGES

This report which was prepared for the Road Research Unit Structures Committee of the National Roads Board, describes the inspection of 53 bridges with six different types of joint: compression seals, rubber cushion seals (transflex), strip seals, no movement joint, steel plates, and poured sealants. An inspection form was drawn up to cover all factors affecting joint performance. Examples of completed forms are included in appendix a. Particular attention was paid to: the standard of installation, present condition of the joint and road surfacing adjacent to and over the joint, temperature and shrinkage movements, signs of replacement or maintenance, rideability, noise level under traffic, and watertightness. The results of the inspection are given, and the effect of earthquake design on joint selection is mentioned. Recommendations are put forward for joint selection and joint improvement. (TRRL)
