AN INVESTIGATION OF THE SENSITIVITY AND THE LINEARITY OF RESPONSE OF A STEERED SHIP
The change of ship response in a zig-zag maneuver due to a small variation of each of the coefficients in the equations of motion was obtained. The degree of the response change, and therefore the sensitivity, is expressed by a non-dimensional parameter. Abkowitzs mathematical model with Chislett and Strom-Tejsens data for the mariner class ship are used for this purpose. The nonlinear equations are solved using a numerical technique. Both a dynamically stable and unstable ship were investigated by these techniques, the linear relationship between ship yawing and a harmonic rudder oscillation was found by a specially developed experimental technique. The test results were compared with the theoretical computations of the semi-empirical method. Excellent agreement between experiment and theoretical prediction was obtained. ( Author )
