FUEL ECONOMY - IMPROVEMENTS THROUGH PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY
The move to improved fuel economy in motor vehicles has received impetus recently from increased fuel prices. This paper examines several methods by which the petroleum industry can contribute to fuel economy. Although some assistance can be achieved from refining techniques, the major thrust will be from fuel efficient lubricants, through either viscosity and/or friction modification. The technologies for achieving these two alternative solutions are reviewed. In addition, the methods of testing for fuel economy are discussed and examined (a). (TRRL)
