ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT. ANALYSIS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES OF SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PROJECTS

Part 1 of the report discusses the environmental consequences of major projects and outlines the action taken in member countries as regards environmental assessment and measures for the protection of the environment. The environmental consequences of different forms of action are assessed, and the influence of this environmental impact assessment on the decision-making process is examined. The various stages of environmental assessment (identification of cases needing assessment, content of an environmental impact assessment, classification of impacts, quantification, qualitative assessments, and flexiblity) are described in detail, and a brief mention is made of experience in practice and international aspects. Part 2 of the report summarizes the position in each member country contributing to the project. Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. (TRRL)
