CONSIDERATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS IN THE DESIGN OF SINGLE POINT MOORINGS
Whenever and wherever a natural resource is in demand there is the incentive to utilize it as rapidly and economically as possible. It is in this regard, that the Single Point Mooring System plays an important part in current day effort of moving crude oil. From the economical point of view, a Single Point Mooring System can be more rapidly and economically installed than any offshore terminaling (or port) system, except perhaps the very restrictive offshore multiple buoy system. Single Point Mooring Systems can readily be designed, installed and operated in water depths which pose no problem for the largest sized tankers. While there are various adaptations of the Single Point Mooring in existance, the overwhelming majority of SPMs are of the floating buoy/multiple anchor leg systems (MALs) and this is the system which is the main subject of this discussion. The Single Anchor Leg System (SALM) will, however, be briefly described as this system has shown promise of being advantageous in certain locations and in deeper water depths.
