ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS IN HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS

This book reviews the state-of-the-art of using electrical instruments in hazardous locations. The development of the electrical instrument and the electrical circuit for signalling is traced from its early use in Welsh coal mines to its present use in industry and aboard ship. Recognition is given to the research work done in many countries toward the development of safe instruments and their use in electrical systems that are designed to be intrinsically safe because their electrical potential is incapable of creating a spark that could cause ignition of a hazardous atmosphere. The rules of the various regulatory bodies are explained and the application of these rules to everyday problems is fully discussed. The book is oriented toward educating the designer in how to develop and use intrinsically safe electrical systems.
