Results of studies on traffic volume at left-turn exits of grade-separated intersections

This article presents some specific aspects of standardization of the technical requirements to grade-separated intersections with due regard to the regulatory framework of the Russian Federation. Given the changed traffic conditions in the country in the last 30 years,there is a need to develop modern requirements to designing of grade-separated freeway intersections. The key area of improvement of regulatory environment is harmonization and standardization of design solutions. Development of such requirements must be based on the analysis of existing traffic conditions in the country road network in general and at grade-separated intersections in particular. Being aware of the fact that it is the left-turn traffic volume that determines the intersection type, the author obtained and presented the findings of the studies focusing on road traffic flow on left-turn exits from grade-separated intersections with due regard to the current traffic environment in the Russian Federation. The study was conducted on the road network within catchment areas of the major urban agglomerations of the Russian Federation: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Kaliningrad and Sochi in 2016 and 2017. The study focused on the intersections of roads of the first technical category (freeway) with the following road categories: I (freeway), II (undivided highway), III (collector road) and IV (local road). Statistical processing of the measurement results provided pooled data on the vehicle traffic flow at the exits from grade-separated intersections. It should be noted that these findings can provide a rationale for introducing a classification of road intersections in the Russian Federation.
