COMPACTION OF THIN ASPHALT LAYERS. RESULTS FROM TEST SECTIONS 1972

The compaction of thin, very stable asphalt layers was tested on experimental sections of road. The experiments were conducted with non-vibrating and vibrating tandem rollers, the pneumatic tyred roller and the vibratory roller. The compaction power of each type of roller and the mathematical relations between the type of roller, the number of roller passes and the compaction obtained are discussed. The degree of compaction was assessed by the conventional method from the density of the cores. Moreover cores were subjected to experiments with the gyratory compactor and the creep test to determine the influence of the mix composition, compaction and compaction method on the stiffness of the asphalt layer. Conclusions are drawn. (TRRL)
