ESSAIS D'ADHESION SUR BETONS BITUMINEUX

The object of this study is to examine whether the ultimate compression test under axial stresses can be used to assess the quality of the bitumen-aggregate bond in bituminous mixtures. Compression tests in dry conditions and after 7 days of immersion in water were conducted at 25 deg C and 55 mm/minute on bituminous mixtures having a mix design formula where the nature of the aggregates was the variable parameter (13 types of aggregate, and for each aggregate the bitumen content (91 1/10 mm penetration). Measurements were made on the aggregates to characterize the surface characteristics (behaviour under standardized compaction). The results obtained show the influence of the nature of the aggregates on the binder-aggregate bond, and also the influence of the thickness of the bitumen film, of the granular characteristics of the mixture and of the voids content.
