TRAFFIC RESTRAINT IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS. INTERIM REPORT ON THE FULL SCALE TEST IN NORTH RHINE/WESTFALIA

VERKEHRSBERUHIGUNG IN WOHNGEBIETEN. ZWISCHENBERICHT UEEBER DEN GROSSVERSUCH DES LANDES NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN

The object of the test, which was undertaken from November 1976 to November 1978, was to obtain information on the possible application of measures discussed in the literature to increase traffic restraint and safety in residential areas. The report describes the organisation, concepts, preliminary counts, before and after studies and first impressions. Some measures are illustrated in photographs: restraint on through traffic, re-arrangement of parked vehicles, sett paving, speed limits. The attitude of the population - determined partly from interviews - towards the full scale test was largely positive. It is stressed that it is important that those affected do not only accept the objectives but are also ready to make the changes in behaviour associated with the objectives. (TRRL)
