Angles des trajectoires de sortie de route lors d'accidents de perte de contrôle en courbe

Roadway departure angles in loss-of-control accidents on curves. In-depth investigation programmes on traffic crashes, such as the IFSTTAR In-Depth Accident Study (IDAS), make it possible to carry out research projects on the aetiology of accidents. However, they also contribute to provide more descriptive information on accident phenomena, notably as regards the kinematics of the involved vehicles during the final stages of the accident process. Such information may be of direct usefulness for road engineers and managers. In particular, the knowledge of the angles at which vehicles leave the road in loss-of-control accidents may be useful for the definition of strategies and techniques for the treatment of roadside obstacles or the installation of safety barriers, with the aim to reduce the severity of run-off-road crashes. As part of further development of previous work, we studied the statistical distribution of roadway departure angles for loss-of-control accidents on curves, based on 84 IDAS cases occurred in rural areas. The results obtained deal with the mean, standard deviation, and form of this distribution. Separate results are presented for right side departures and for left side departures which, on average, occur at higher angles. As regards the final roadway departure, the angles appear to be normally distributed for left side departures (m = 16,95° ; s = 7,33°) whereas, for right side departures, they are better described by a two-parameter Gamma distribution (m = 12,79° ; s = 7,39°).
