Latest Evidence on Factors Impacting Road Traffic Growth: an Evidence Review

This assessment review updates evidence collected in 2014 (referred as the ‘2014 Review’) on trends in traffic growth and automobile mileage in the United Kingdom and the factors behind these trends. It also provides evidence on usage of vans, light duty vehicles, and heavy good vehicles, which were not covered in the 2014 Review. The aim is to provide information on investment in the English strategic road network between 2020 and 2025, for the development of the second Road Investment Strategy (RIS2). The specific aim of the review is to identify and present findings on how technological, social, economic, demographic, political, geographical and environmental factors and changes have affected car usage and ownership.
