REINFORCED EARTH STRUCTURES. RECOMMENDATIONS AND STATE OF THE ART

The aim of the report is to define the rules governing the use of reinforced earth in road structures. It deals with design, justification tiles, specifications on materials, rules for the execution of the work and for control operations, and surveillance. Several new elements relating to the design, calculation and surveillance of engineering structures in general are included: concept of minimum life time, design methods in agreement with the new guidelines on structural design (DCC 1979) based on a semi-probabilistic analysis of safety, principles of general surveillance of a structure, which cannot be separated from the concept of lifetime. This document cancels the technical information note dated April 1973 published by the ILCPC and all notes and circulars published by the SETRA except volume 3 of the pilot file MUR 73. The test procedures for (1) measuring the internal friction angle of embankment material for reinforced earth and the soil/reinforcement friction angle, and the resistivity of embankment material at saturation point, (2) extracting with water soluble salts contained in embankment materials, (3) measuring the organic matter content and (4) for carrying out durability tests after extraction of control samples are given in an annex together with technical files on reinforcement, concrete scales with or without reinforcement, bolts, joints, skin elements and examples of justification calculations for a reinforced earth structure at the foot of a slope and at the foot of an abutment.
