Kilometres driven in Sweden by Swedish-registered heavy lorries :revision of input data to the emission model HBEFA

HBEFA (The Handbook Emission Factors for Road Transport) is a model for estimation of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Distribution of the total number of kilometres driven on weight classes and vehicle types, such as heavy lorries with and without trailers, has a large effect on estimated emissions in HBEFA. The present distribution of the total number of kilometres driven by Swedish heavy lorries in Sweden used for the different segment of HBEFA, has deficits. The distribution is based on data from several data sets from the annual survey ”Swedish road goods transport”, conducted on permission by Trafikanalys. A comparison between data from ”Swedish road goods transport” and odometer readings from vehicle inspections, indicates that the distribution of driven kilometres in ” Swedish road goods transport ” is incorrect for the lower weight classes of heavy lorries, while it is more reliable for the heaviest lorries. The aim of this study is to revise the distribution of kilometres driven with heavy Swedish lorries on Swedish roads on the different segments in HBEFA. By that, a revision is also done for distribution on the segments for the total (Swedish + foreign) kilometres driven. According to the Swedish Road Traffic Register, over 80 000 lorries and semi-trailer tractors with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes were in use in the year of 2015. Data on kilometres driven for each lorry that has been in use is available and can be compiled to level of segment 1, that is lorries and tractors without trailers. By analyzing data from ”Swedish road goods transport” from the years 2010–2012, the kilometres driven have been divided into segment level 2. This segment describes whether the lorry or tractor has a trailer or not and if this is the case, the weight of the trailer.
