A Network Model of Three Taxi Service Modes Considering the Use of Smart Phone Based Taxi Hailing Application

With the popularity of smart phone based taxi hailing applications, customers have more methods to get taxi service. Customers can hail a traditional taxi by waiting on the street, hail a traditional taxi using smart phone applications, or hail a private car providing taxi service using smart phone applications. All of the three methods are widely used. In this study, a network model considering the three types of taxi services are formulated. The network model is constructed by considering the market competition between the three types of taxi service. The existence of equilibrium for the network model is proved and a solution algorithm based on fixed-point iteration method is presented. Numerical experiments are performed to show market performance of different taxi service modes by changing pricing strategies and fleet sizes. Specially, the authors compare the market performance with and without considering information-sharing to vacant drivers. Lastly, an upper programming model is formulated with the objective of maximizing the social welfare. The optimal pricing strategy is obtained by solving the model.
