Paradox Links Can Improve System Efficiency: An Illustration in Stochastic Assignment Problem

In this paper, a counter-intuitive phenomenon that paradox links (which means adding or marginally improving these links will increase system’s cost) can improve system’s efficiency is illustrated in the stochastic assignment problem. According to some analytical and numerical results based on the multinomial logit (MNL) model, the authors find that in some conditions, increasing the improvement degree of a paradox link, or adding more paradox links can not only eliminate the existing paradox but also enhance the network’s efficiency. In addition, paradox link’s different effects on different O-D pairs are also discussed, which illustrates a potential benefit from differentiated restrictions for travelers from different O-D pairs. Finally, a road sub-network in the city of Harbin is applied to corroborate the above counter-intuitive phenomenon. Conclusions and observations of this paper can give traffic practitioners some new ideas to deal with paradox links, and to make the system more efficient.
