Characteristics of Passenger’s Alighting and Boarding in Metro Stations

Passenger’s alighting and boarding movement is one important component of pedestrian flow in metro stations, which has impacts on pedestrian distribution as well as the train dwell time. Thus, characteristics of passenger’s alighting and boarding in metro stations should be brought to the forefront. In this research, two field surveys are respectively performed in two metro stations in Hong Kong and mainland China at non-peak time to observe passenger’s alighting and boarding characteristics and collect sample data. Passenger’s non-compliance behavior is defined to express the case that boarding passengers start to get aboard even when there are still alighting passengers inside the metro carriage. It is found that passenger’s non-compliance behaviors are commonly existing. Critical time indicators are used to measure the alighting and boarding efficiency. The level of passenger’s non-compliance behaviors is defined, and its effects on the alighting and boarding process is further analyzed. The analysis result shows that the level of passenger’s non-compliance behaviors is basically proportional to the simultaneous alighting and boarding time, and higher level of passenger’s non-compliance behaviors lead to longer passenger’s alighting time and boarding time but it has little influence on the overall transaction time. The data and results of this research could provide reference for verification and validation of pedestrian models and simulations, and it also provides evidences for metro managers to make strategy.
