THE EFFECT OF DEICING SALTS ON VEHICLE CORROSION. LITERATURE STUDY

VAEGSALTNINGENS EFFEKT PAA FORDONS KORROSION LITTERATURSTUDIE

The aim of this literature survey of the influence of deicing salts on vehicle corrosion is to provide basic data for the evaluation of the need of further investigations and analyses at the Swedish road administration. It is concluded that several investigations within this area have been carried out in Switzerland, West Germany, Great Britain, USA, Canada and the Nordic Countries. These investigations were mostly intended to develop corrosion inhibitors for road salt and were mostly conducted on bright steel sheet. A good assumption is that the corrosion process on surface protected sheet is different. None of the investigations clarified the increase of corrosion during winter, in climate conditions similar to the Swedish. Neither is a method for investigation of deicing salts on surface protected vehicles indicated. (TRRL)
