PIARC Databook of Road and Road Transport (2014-2018)

The reliability and usability of statistics related to road and transport should be carefully examined. It is hoped that an international organization can take the initiative in disseminating global road data with clear definition and consistency. World Road Association (PIARC) members are heavy data users and there is some demand for road statistics to be managed by PIARC. This report spells out details of PIARC's research and outcomes of some pilot projects, and the latest phase of "International Road Statistics of PIARC", renamed as "PIARC Databook of Road and Road Transport", almost ready for publication, is included. An initial pilot project in Spring 2015 collected (1) Road length by road type with definition, (2) Number of vehicle in use with definition, (3) Characteristics of road, and (4) Road length by pavement and road type. This first survey collected data from France, Japan, Austria, Chile, Korea, Mexico, and the U.S. Feedback from the first survey was obtained and a second survey was conducted primarily to clarify the definitions of road type and vehicle in use. The production of the latest phase of "International Road Statistics of PIARC" is discussed including selection of data items, clarification of their definition, surveying method, survey response, data aggregation and analysis, and comparison between PIARC data and IRF Geneva Programme Center (IRF) data. The appendix includes data tables by country of: basic data; motorway in length; vehicle in use; definitions of passenger cars, buses, light and heavy goods vehicles; and data sources.
