Continual Advancement and Innovation for Bridge Flyover and Viaduct Construction Methodologies in Urbanized Singapore

During the last 50 years, Singapore has seen rapid growth in road infrastructure development and made revolutionary changes to meet ever-increasing challenges for carrying out works in a densely built-up urban environment. Today, roads cover 12% of land use in Singapore. To manage demands and expectations in land scarce Singapore, the Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA) is faced with the imminent task of building the road network more efficiently and effectively within the tight space that is available for the construction of bridges, flyovers, elevated roads and viaducts above existing carriageways. This paper looks into the evolution and continual advancement of construction methodologies for road infrastructure projects for bridges, flyovers and viaducts in Singapore over the past 50 years. The pioneering road projects from the use of pre-stressed and precast technology, segmental concrete construction to the latest innovative methods of construction employed in Singapore are highlighted. This paper also discusses the LTA’s experience in facing the ever increasing challenges that accompany the road infrastructures projects.
