A Proposal for a New Type of Precast Bridge Deck Connection

As the number of deteriorated bridges worldwide increases, the importance of maintenance and replacement of existing bridges are being emphasized. Cast-in-place concrete deck which is mainly applied to deck replacement of existing bridges have problems such as deterioration by initial crack, labor cost increase, difficulties of maintenance and replacement, and construction time increase. On the contrary, a precast concrete deck is considered as an effective alternative because of its quality assurance and fast construction. For precast concrete deck system, structural performance, economic feasibility and constructability are mostly determined by the connection methods between the precast deck panels. Post-tensioning and loop connection, two most commonly used connection methods so far, however, have limitations of high construction cost of prestressing work and the relatively low durability performance of precast deck joint respectively. Therefore, this study proposes a new type of precast bridge deck connection which is more improved than existing bridge deck joints and verifies its flexural strength by evaluating results of various parameter tests.
