THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW AND IMPROVED TYPES OF ROAD SUPPORT. VOLUME 2 (PARTS 7 & 8)
This section of the report deals with the possibility of using a precast concrete lining for the construction of spine roadways at Selby. During the investigation, the Campine Coalfield in Belgium and a number of tunnels driven in weak rock were visited. These visits indicated that an expanded type concrete lining incorporating compressible packings used in conjunction with a full face tunnelling machine would be suitable for the spine roadways. Other possible schemes are discussed, including the use of a grouted lining with a boom type roadheader and of steel arch rings with either a full face machine or a roadheader. The alternative schemes have not been individually costed but it is believed that the time-related elements of cost will reflect the major differences among the schemes. (a) (TRRL)
