DETERMINING THE EFFECT OF THE SPATIALLY STRESSED CONDITION ON THE READINGS OF THE PRESSURE METER

The paper presents a method for determining the effect of the state of soil stress on soil pressure meter readings. The stressed condition can lead to error in the recorded stresses of up to 50%. An equation is given which relates soil pressure meter readings as a function of stressed condition in terms of principal stresses and the angles between principal stresses and measured stress. A method for positioning soil pressure meters in order to measure soil stress is described in detail. (TRRL)
