MOPED ACCIDENTS 1975-1976. THE AGES UP TO 15 YEARS. A DESCRIPTIVE AND EXPLORATORY STUDY

MOPEDOLYCKORNA 1975-1976. I AALDRARNA T O M 15 AAR. EN DESKRIPTIV OCH EXPLORATIV STUDIE

The study discusses the following points: number of youths injured; description of accidents and types of injuries; duration of medical treatment; connection between place of accident and injury, and between home and place of accident; influence of accident on youth, mentally, physically and socially; attitudes and group norms pertaining to moped driving; possible preventive measures. Medical records regarding moped accidents during on year in Gothenburg, for ages up to 15 years have been studied and interviews made with a test group with fractures. Among the results arrived at, the following may be mentioned. Hospitalization caused by moped accidents among 15-year olds is almost as common as all other types of accidents in the age group 0-15 years. The motive for buying mopeds is mainly one of "social pressure". No significant differences were found in the number of accidents between areas with new and old traffic planning. Youths do not comply with age limit regulations for driver and passenger. The author proposes a driving licence, and raising the age limit to 16. Other possible measures would be compulsory registration of mopeds, certification courses for drivers and withdrawal from the market of mopeds that can be tuned up. (TRRL)
