FIELD TRIALS WITH SAND-SULPHUR-ASPHALT MAINTENANCE MIXES (SHELL CANADA LIMITED THERMOPATCH)
The riding quality of certain flexible pavements in Saskatchewan is severely affected by shallow-depressions at transverse cracks, culvert locations, and bridge approaches. A typical depression at a transverse crack has a maximum depth of approximately 10 mm and a width of 100 cm. The worst situation is where spacings between depressions are short. In 1974, Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation conducted a short trial with Shell Canada Limited's THERMOPATCH as fill material for such depressions. This concept involves a relatively fluid, rapid-setting mixture of sand, sulphur, and asphalt that is simply dumped into a depression, struck off level with adjacent pavement, and left to harden. The success of the 1974 trial led to full scale, province-wide operational trials with THERMOPATCH in 1978. The primary objective of the program was to develop operational procedures for mixing and laying the material. In 4-1/2 months, 179 t were placed in 5,645 depressions on 120 km of pavement scattered throughout the province. A further 41 t was placed in 20 deep patches. Preliminary evaluation after 12 months indicates the primary objective was met. Procedures for using THERMOPATCH were established and limitations defined. This Technical Report covers technical aspects, operational procedures, economics, and performance of THERMOPATCH.
